NEWS UPDATES
Bicholim Police register a case against Amit Modak (54), a resident of Virar West, Mumbai, for allegedly cheating a 28-year-old Sakhalim youth of Rs 1.13 lakh on the pretext of providing a cruise ship job. Modak allegedly collected money towards processing, visa, air tickets and medical formalities but failed to provide the promised job. The accused is presently arrested in connection with a separate Colva Police case.  •  In a pre-emptive legal move, St Cruz resident Paresh Salgaonkar has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, anticipating a possible appeal by the Election Commission of India against the recent High Court ruling directing the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) to include the names of Salgaonkar and five of his family members in the electoral roll. By filing the caveat, Salgaonkar has ensured that the Supreme Court cannot pass an ex parte order, including a stay, without first giving him an opportunity to be heard.  •  Acting on a complaint by St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar, the Tiswadi Deputy Collector has stayed proceedings concerning 1.15 lakh sqm of land across Survey Nos. 7/0, 64/1 and 6/0.The order puts on hold a May 27 judgment and the consequential purchase order dated October 9, 2026, until further orders. The Mamlatdar and Joint Mamlatdar have been directed not to process or certify any changes in Form I & XIV or other revenue records relating to the disputed properties. The next hearing is scheduled for November 24, 2026.
