The Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) has invited expressions of interest to lease approximately one kilometre of Baina Beach for water sports activities for a period of 30 years, triggering strong opposition from Congress MP Captain Viriato Fernandes and fishermen's leader Olencio Simoes.

The lease is proposed to be awarded through an e-tender-cum-e-auction process.

Opposing the move, Captain Viriato Fernandes said the Congress would not allow the privatisation of Goa's beaches. He warned that the party would resist any move that threatens public access to the state's coastline.

Fishermen's leader Olencio Simoes also warned of a massive agitation against the proposed lease. He said fishermen from across Goa would march to the Mormugao Port Authority and stop port operations if the move went ahead.

The proposed 30-year lease has raised concerns over the use of Baina Beach and the implications for traditional fishing communities and public access to the coastline.
The leaders have warned that they would intensify their opposition if the MPA proceeds with the proposal.
