In a major development in the Ganeshpuri-Mapusa dacoity case, police have detained a taxi driver whose vehicle was allegedly used by the dacoits involved in the crime. The taxi was seized after reports emerged that the accused had attempted to flee the state using the same vehicle.
A forensic team is currently inspecting the seized taxi for evidence that could help establish the suspects’ movements and involvement.
The brazen dacoity, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, has sent shockwaves across Goa.\
A group of five to seven masked men broke into the house of Dr Mahendra Kamat Ghanekar, a 49-year-old doctor residing in the densely populated Ganeshpuri area of Mapusa.
The gang, armed with a large knife and iron rods, tied up four members of the family for over two hours — between 3 am and 5 am — and made off with cash and gold worth over ₹35 lakh, fleeing in the family’s car.
In a chilling detail, the intruders reportedly ate food from the house during the robbery and even asked the doctor’s elderly mother to make them tea.
