Goa University has suspended the contractor operating its main canteen after worms were allegedly found in food served to students, sparking outrage on campus and protests by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

The University announced that students staying on campus will not be required to pay mess fees until a new catering contractor is appointed, ensuring that they are not burdened while alternative arrangements are put in place.

The issue triggered strong reactions from students, who alleged that repeated complaints about the quality and hygiene of food had gone unaddressed. They demanded the removal of the Member Secretary of the Canteen Committee, claiming concerns raised over an extended period were ignored.

Escalating the protest, BJYM members entered the office of the University Registrar and staged a demonstration inside the cabin, demanding immediate action to address food safety and hygiene issues on the campus. The youth wing accused the University administration of failing to ensure safe and hygienic meals for students and called for stricter monitoring of campus food services.

Earlier, BJYM had also protested outside the University's administrative block, urging the authorities to take swift action against those responsible for the lapse.
