Gudi Padwa marks the Hindu New Year and is celebrated with a festive traditional meal. Popular dishes include Puran Poli or Shrikhand Poori. In the Konkan region of Maharashtra and Goa, raw mango recipes are an important part of the celebration because it is the mango season. Two special dishes commonly prepared are Vatli Daal (a tangy mix of soaked chana dal and raw mango) and Kairiche Panhe (a refreshing raw mango drink). During the spring festival Chaitra Haldi Kunku, married women worship Goddess Gauri and exchange haldi-kumkum. Guests are welcomed with seasonal raw mango dishes such as Kairichi Dal and Kairi Panha, along with fruits and snacks. The celebrations often begin with eating a symbolic mix of neem leaves and jaggery, which represents accepting the sweet and bitter moments of life.
