The Se Cathedral Experience: 3D Projection Mapping Brings St. Francis Xavier’s Story to Life

The recent world-first concert at Se Cathedral in Goa, featuring a breathtaking 3D projection mapping, has set a new benchmark in both technology and storytelling. While projection mapping is not new, it has never been done before on such a grand scale — with a concert backdrop designed specifically for this purpose. The challenge of blending intricate lighting, sound, and visuals required months of simulations and meticulous planning. The 3D projection mapping covered an astounding 32,000 square feet of Se Cathedral 's stunning architecture. Each five-minute video rendered weighed 125GB and had to be encoded in full 4K. To achieve the vivid, high-contrast visuals, 4K laser projectors of 45,000 lumens were used, along with custom lenses imported specifically for the project. In terms of sound, the team employed the same state-of-the-art Coda system used in Ed Sheeran's live shows, bringing world-class acoustics to the Se Cathedral grounds. The projection mapping not only highlighted the breathtaking architecture but also told the captivating story of St. Francis Xavier’s birth, journey to Goa, and death, while showcasing global dedications to him. A special five-minute Christmas segment was also created to add festive cheer to the concert, with full Christmas decor to match the season’s mood. The project required precise engineering, advanced graphics, and high-performance computing, with a dedicated air-conditioned server room set up on the grounds for seamless execution.
