Marigold cultivation in the command area of the Anjunem Irrigation Project (AIP) has emerged as a promising initiative to promote local flower production and improve farmers’ income in Goa.

The initiative, undertaken by the Water Resources Department, Government of Goa, aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant under the concepts of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Swayampurna Goa’. It was implemented under the directives of Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar, with the guidance and support of Chief Engineer Dnyaneshwar Salelkar.

As part of the programme, a one-day training session on marigold cultivation was organised for 25 selected farmers. The necessary agricultural inputs required for cultivation were also supplied to the participants before planting.

On August 16, 2026, a total of 18,000 hybrid marigold seedlings were distributed among the farmers. Transplanting was subsequently completed between August 16 and 20, covering a total cultivation area of 15,000 square metres. Technical guidance was provided to the farmers at various stages of crop growth to support proper cultivation practices.

The demonstration plots have now reached the harvesting stage, with fully bloomed marigold flowers reflecting the progress of the initiative.

Marigold flowers are in high demand in Goa during Dussehra, Diwali and other festive occasions. At present, a significant portion of the demand is met through supplies from neighbouring states. By encouraging local cultivation, the initiative aims to reduce dependence on outside markets while strengthening Goa’s agricultural sector.

The programme also seeks to create additional income opportunities for farmers by encouraging them to take up flower cultivation as a commercially viable activity.
