Up to 5,000 Fine and Jail Time for Playing Audio on Speakers

Train journeys in India are set to become a lot more peaceful. In a strict move to reduce public nuisance, Indian Railways following directives like those from Southern Railway has ramped up enforcement against passengers who play music, videos or reels on speaker mode, or engage in loud phone conversations inside trains and railway platforms.

Invoking provisions of the Railways Act (including sections related to creating a nuisance and failing to obey railway staff instructions), authorities have empowered ticket examiners and commercial staff to levy immediate fines of up to 1,000 rs. Passengers who persist with disruptive behaviour despite warnings can face severe consequences, including removal from the train, ticket forfeiture and up to six months of imprisonment paired with penalties reaching 5,000 rs.

To spread awareness, railway divisions are rolling out announcements in Hindi, regional languages and English via public address systems. Commuters are strongly advised to carry and use earphones to ensure a comfortable and hassle-free travel environment for fellow passengers.
